About this car

1973 Ford Transit Mk1 Dormobile Camper Restoration Project
Classic 1973 Mk1 Ford Transit with factory Dormobile camper conversion, imported into NZ in 1975. A great project for a vintage vehicle enthusiast.
Fitted with a Nissan LD28 diesel engine, certified in 1995. The engine is strong and runs well.

I bought the van in 2019 intending to restore it.
The previous owner drove it from Cromwell to Dunedin (approx. 2.5 hours) to deliver it.
It drove well, but the speedometer stopped working on the journey; the cable appears damaged.
It has been dry stored in my garage since, apart from a 20-minute drive to Dunedin for exterior rust repairs and undercoating. Glow plugs have been replaced and it has a brand-new starter motor. Odometer reads in miles. Registration is on hold.

Bodywork & Condition
Rust repairs are needed, mainly in the front footwells. Rust removal has been started on one corner of the tailgate opening but remains unfinished. I have plenty of new coated sheet steel for repairs.
The side door and rear tailgate are currently off, ready for repairs to the rust along their bottoms. The rear camper interior has been gutted due to deteriorated plywood and is now empty.

This is a genuine old-school classic with plenty of potential to become a unique vintage camper again. Ideal for an enthusiast or restorer with the skills to take on a rewarding project.

Selling because restoration isn’t my speciality, and I simply don’t have the time to finish it. I’d love to see it go to someone who can give this old Transit a new lease on life.
Sold as-is.
