About this car

2012 Volkswagen Tiguan R-Line Turbo Petrol | 117,000 km Black

A really lovely example of the VW Tiguan R-Line. Sporty, comfortable, beautifully quiet on the open road and an absolute pleasure to drive.

I have genuinely loved this car. It has been extremely reliable and has always been garaged.

We now live on Waiheke full-time, so having a car kept in Auckland city is surplus to requirements. It is currently garaged in the Downtown Car Park in central Auckland, making it very easy and convenient for viewing and test drives.

The R‑Line is the sportier, higher-spec Tiguan, with a more refined look and feel than the standard model. The turbo petrol engine gives it plenty of power while still being an easy, comfortable everyday car.

Compact and easy to drive around the city, but substantial and very planted on the open road

What I’ve loved most about this car is how solid, smooth it feels. It’s remarkably quiet when cruising on the motorway or open road, very comfortable on longer trips, and has that lovely reassuring European driving feel.

As to be expected with age the exterior has a few little nicks in the finishing and curb-grind on the alloys. It has been a genuinely dependable car and I’m sad to say goodbye but it’s time for Tiggy to find a new home.

2012 Volkswagen Tiguan: what owners report

  • First-generation 1.4 TSI engines wear their timing chains and tensioners, so the chain stretches; ADAC lists it as a weak point on cars up to 2015.2009–2015
  • The DSG gearboxes tend to jerk when pulling away, and dual-mass flywheel or mechatronic unit failures are not unusual at higher mileage.2009–2016
  • On first-generation cars, springs, dampers and axle mounts wear and rattle and are often flagged at inspection; the second generation passes the chassis check far more cleanly.2009–2016
  • ADAC breakdown figures for the first generation are good in most registration years, and the rate falls steadily for younger cars.2009–2016
