2009 Volkswagen Tiguan: what owners report

First-generation 1.4 TSI engines wear their timing chains and tensioners, so the chain stretches; ADAC lists it as a weak point on cars up to 2015.2009–2015
The DSG gearboxes tend to jerk when pulling away, and dual-mass flywheel or mechatronic unit failures are not unusual at higher mileage.2009–2016
On first-generation cars, springs, dampers and axle mounts wear and rattle and are often flagged at inspection; the second generation passes the chassis check far more cleanly.2009–2016
ADAC breakdown figures for the first generation are good in most registration years, and the rate falls steadily for younger cars.2009–2016
