Mercedes-Benz Sl 500 1989

A once in a lifetime opportunity to purchase a unicorn!

In 1967 two race engineers resigned from Mercedes Benz as their employer called it quits on the race program. This was directly due to Henry Ford II, Carroll Shelby & Ken Miles cleaning up at Le Mans from 1964 to 1968 with the GT40 after Enzo Ferrari insulted Henry Ford Jnr. The lads went home to their wee town, Affalterbach north of Stuttgart up in the apple orchids & went to business! By 1993 AMG they were regarded as the absolute pinnacle of modifying the mighty Mercedes Benz & were promptly bought out by their former bosses!

This is the legendary & highly collectable “Pre Merger” era which is seeing prices worldwide skyrocket! Very few Mercs ever got the Pre Merger AMG treatment! The Sultan of Brunei being on of many famous customers & arguably one of the most famous models “The Cocaine Hammer”. Jeremy Clarkson also covered the “Yakuza” Japanese mafia (Youtube)

In September of 1989 this incredible example was one of the last cars ever made in West Germany as the Berlin Wall came down on the 9th November, just a few weeks later! It went to Japan & received the AMG treatment in 1989 in the famous Tokyo AMG shop!

AMG upgrades on this one include…

• 17” Genuine OZ Racing Forged 3 piece Aero’s
• West German made Body Kit
• Lorinser Suspension Upgrade
• AMG Wheel & Dash
• AMG Mats & Engine cover
• A working LCD TV with remote controls (unbelievably rare upgrade) and it still works!!!

I got this stunner out of a 25 car collection from a reluctant seller with just 58,000km’s on the clock. I too am a reluctant seller but I need to buy a commercial building to secure my business future so the toys gotta go!

In my ownership I have had all 12 roof cylinders replaced. New tyres, replaced top strut bushes, replaced the bonnet lining & had a professional cut, polish & 7yr ceramic coating applied by the best in the business, Obsessive in Penrose.

Believed to be 1 of 130 worldwide 500SL without engine upgrades. These with low km’s like this one are $80,000 NZD in the US
